The Serengeti National Park covers the area of 14,763 square
miles [14,763 km], which is the second largest National Park in Tanzania after
Ruaha National Park.
Serengeti is one of the world's most popular protected areas.
The popularity of this protected area comes due to the longest and the largest
wildlife migration on earth “The
wildebeest migration” from one side of the park to the other, and crossing
the border of Tanzania to the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya. More than one
million wildebeest, accompanied by more than 200,000 zebras and, estimated
300,000 of gazelles migrates every year in search of green pasture and water.
This kind migration has claimed to be one of the seven African natural wonders.
The Serengeti Park is also popular for animals like lions
and other carnivores. The size of this reserve has greatly contributed to
maintaining the survival of animals at risk of disappearing such as cheetah.
When you are in Serengeti will witness the hunting animals like leopards, together
with more than 500 species of birds.
Today, we will give you ten (10) things about the Serengeti
Park that you would like to know and disclose to other people who did not know
about them;
- Over a million years ago, the Serengeti reserve has remained largely unadulterated by environmental changes. Wildlife, plants and streams of water are still largely natural as it was one million years ago. Surprisingly, the old man's remains (lived 2 million years ago) were discovered here by a prominent archaeologist in East Africa, Dr. Leakey.
- Most tourists are attracted to this Park to witness more than one million wildebeest’s annual migration for the green the pastures and water. However, the zebras also migrate with the wildebeests, at least in small numbers.
- Thousands of migrant animals fail to complete their journey due to being eaten by predators like lions, hyenas, crocodiles especially when crossing the rivers and other predators.
- Serengeti National Park lies between 3020 ft and 6,070ft above the sea level. Its weather is generally dry but it rains in the months of June and July.
- Serengeti is largely of savannah's vegetation and scattered shrubs and which is ideal for both herbivore and carnivore animals. Among the herbivores animals that are located here are zebras, elephants, giraffe, wildebeests, elands, gazelles and buffalos. Among the carnivores animals that are found here are lions, cheetah, leopards, hyenas, foxes, etc.
-
Serengeti is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. More than one million wildebeests migrate by crossing the river Mara and towards the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya in search of their feed. And stays in Kenya for only one month and the remaining months spend their time in Tanzania
-
The Ecological System of Serengeti National Park is one of oldest in the world. This park conserves various organisms including plants and animals that are not available anywhere in the world.
- Serengeti is the source of the popular Masai community before being transferred to the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority in 1959. Masai is one of the African communities that still live by their customs and traditions, such as initiations programs, traditional dance and sacrifices.
- The Ngorongoro Conservation Authority area was originally part of the Serengeti national park until 1951 when England isolated it for human and wildlife research to live together in one place without interruption.
- For the first time a detailed study of the Serengeti environments was made by two Germans (father and son), Dr. Bernhard and Michael Grizmek. Details of the findings of Serengeti surveys were preserved and recorded as a reference in their popular book entitled "Serengeti will never die."
